The 1/4oz silver Britannia coin is the official legal tender silver coin from the Royal Mint of England. The coins feature a design of Britannia on the reverse from Philip Nathan with the latest effigy of Queen Elizabeth II from Jody Clark on the obverse. They debuted in 1997.

On the obverse of the coin is the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. Her Majesty has reigned as the Queen of England since 1952 and this is the fifth effigy of her to feature on British coinage. This design was completed by Jody Clark in July 2015 and began to feature on 2016 dated coins from the Royal Mint. It captures the Queen in right-profile relief wearing the Royal Diadem crown.

The reverse side uses the Philip Nathan image of Britannia common on the gold and platinum coins in the series. Nathan’s design was chosen by the Royal Mint following an art contest in 1987 and offers a modern interpretation of the historic Britannia figure. Always associated with the nations seafaring history and dominant naval traditions, Britannia is depicted along the coast with a trident clutched in her right hand and a shield in her left. The shield guards the British Isles and features the Union Jack design, while the trident gives her control over the seas.
